Drawing inspiration from the fragmented ice of the Saint Lawrence River and the tempestuous waves breaking along the coasts of Newfoundland, Eveline Boulva conceptually, aesthetically, and philosophically centers Dérive V around the notion of “fragmentation.” Ice, embodying both a symptom and a symbol of the climate crisis, becomes a powerful emblem of the impact of human activity on natural landscapes. Through her works, the artist creates a striking visual parallel between the river’s ice—forming immaculate constellations against the deep blue of the waters—and the starry night sky. This existential metaphor, which draws the viewer in, evokes the dizzying sense of powerlessness inspired by the climate crisis and the vulnerability inherent in chaos.
