As a sculptor and textile artist, Sarah Maloney draws inspiration from anatomical and botanical forms to create works that are both poetic and suggestive. Through these works, the artist revisits art history and raises socio-political questions related to gender theories. Displaying exceptional craftsmanship, Maloney multiplies visual mediums, integrating textile art, sculpture, and woodworking into her creations. With a feminist approach, she seeks to subvert decorative arts and crafts to reveal their political nature. Her representations of plants, bones, and organs alternately reference gender, desire, pleasure, and power.
Originally from Toronto, Sarah Maloney lives and works in Elmsdale, Nova Scotia. She holds a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and an MFA from the University of Windsor, and has taught at NSCAD University in Halifax for the past 20 years. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally. Since 2012, she has been a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
