Exploring ceramics, painting and puppetry, Lindsay Montgomery’s work focuses on creating personal mythologies that address a wide range of topics and issues including death and mysticism, evolving modes of power and family dynamics. Her recent creations reimagine Italian Maiolica ceramics and medieval manuscript illustrations to create narratives, myths, and cautionary tales that highlight the persistent tensions with monarchy, colonialism, and feminism. The Istoriato or “story painted” vessel from Renaissance Italy provides the artist an opportunity to reclaim a device that propagated patriarchal classical social norms to reveal, through images and narrative forms, the inequalities and disparities of our societies.
Lindsay Montgomery holds a MFA from the University of Minnesota and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She has exhibited her works in numerous venues in Canada, the United States and France. She is the recipient of the Emerging Artist Award of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (2019), the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics (2018), the Helen Copeland Memorial Award and the Joyce Carlyle Memorial Scholarship in the Crafts Endowment (2014).
