Laurent Craste takes part in the group exhibition Portland Vase: Mania & Muse (1780-2023) at the prestigious Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California, which runs from June 9 to September 15, 2024.
Text by curator Rachel Gotlieb: “The Portland Vase, a Roman cameo glass amphora held in the British Museum since the early 19th century, is a global brand that has resonated with artists, makers, collectors and consumers for centuries. Portland Vase: Mania and Muse asks why and how a singular classic vase becomes a legend, an “influencer” and an artistic and commercial muse across time and space for artists such as Josiah Wedgwood, Viola Frey, Chris Wight, Michael Eden, Nicole Cherubini, Clare Twomey and Roberto Lugo. Featuring over 65 works of art, this exhibition examines the role of brands in our culture, asks why classical traditions dominate the artistic canon and how this tradition might be reconsidered and disrupted.”
