Through a feminist approach, Gabrielle Lajoie-Bergeron’s explorations focus on notions of territory and belonging. Across series of paintings, drawings, sculptures, embroideries, collected or gifted objects, as well as fragments of text, the artist questions the ways in which the world, the body, and history are delineated and interpreted. By working with the normative codes embedded in archetypes of the female figure, she examines how a single representation can simultaneously function as a source of domination and of emancipation.
Gabrielle Lajoie-Bergeron lives and works between Baltimore and La Malbaie. She holds a Master’s degree in Visual and Media Arts from Université du Québec à Montréal (2014) and has received numerous awards and grants, including the Plein sud grant (2016). Her work has been presented in Canada, Europe, Argentina, as well as in Africa.
