Chiguer Contemporary Art is pleased to present Ether, Valérie Potvin’s new solo exhibition. In Ether, human bodies become sites of encounter with the animal and mineral worlds. Rendered in a stone white that gives them an ethereal aura, these silhouettes are inhabited by bones, snakes, and translucent colored resin beetles that appear to float across their surfaces. Transformed into creatures with surrealist undertones, the figures transport us into a dreamlike universe where this coexistence gives rise to a singular tension between vulnerability and resilience.
Casting occupies a central place in Valérie Potvin’s practice. Through this technique, she develops a sculptural language in which materiality oscillates between opacity and transparency. More than a process of reproduction, casting becomes a space of exchange and co-creation, nourished by intimate interactions with her models. This proximity brings a human and social dimension to the works while questioning the relationships between representation, bodily memory, and identity.
The title Ether evokes an invisible substance that, in ancient thought, connected the celestial and terrestrial realms. Like this elusive matter, the exhibition explores the subtle forces that shape our realities and the ties that bind humans to their environment.
