As a potential civilizational collapse looms, Stupeur du temple examines the conceptual notion of the temple through ideological, political, and religious lenses. Martin Bureau echoes the collective state of shock in the face of democratic backsliding and the growing fragility of geopolitical and environmental equilibriums.

In his recent series Stadium, Martin Bureau depicts the ruins of monumental amphitheaters. In these deserted temples of entertainment, consumption, and spectacle, empty bleachers become the scars of a vanished society. Isolated, the stadium, once an infrastructure of social cohesion serving power, now stands as an oversized and derelict spectral carcass.

Watercolor reinforces this aesthetic of ruin through transparent washes that evoke disappearance. Martin Bureau’s architectures appear to disintegrate, altered by the passage of time. A muted palette, articulated in variations of rust, grey, and sepia, heightens the impression of wear, erosion, gradual fading, and a slow slide into oblivion.
